DSWA is seeking to fill a full time Environmental Technician position for landfill gas operations at the Cherry Island Landfill (CIL) located in Wilmington, DE. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Note: This is a safety sensitive position and requires drug testing as a condition of employment.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this position is to monitor and maintain the landfill gas system in accordance with standard operating procedures.

JOB DUTIES:

• Monitors and maintains environmental protection and monitoring systems including but not limited to landfill gas, leachate collection, leachate recirculation, groundwater monitoring, surface water monitoring and air monitoring systems as required.
• Monitors and records data for daily header reads, wellhead reads, daily odor survey and surface monitoring, and complies and computes environmental and engineering data.
• Inspects operations of environmental protection and monitoring systems to evaluate system performance and identify potential malfunctions, and troubleshoots problems related to the functionality of the landfill gas system
• Responds to on-call alarms (24-hour) to identify and rectify the source of environmental protection and monitoring system alarms.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

• Modifies landfill gas systems in accordance with system or landfill needs. Expands landfill gas system in accordance with plans. Repairs landfill gas system as necessary. Installs passive flares as required and may help out plant operators as required.
• Interacts with landfill operations as needed to assist in gas related projects in the construction of the landfill.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS: Requires completion of a high school diploma. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Knowledge of basic mechanics and heavy equipment. Knowledge of department operations, services, and polices. Knowledge of basic office skills. Skill in gas systems monitoring and testing. Skill in maintaining gas system operation. Skill in Flare System Maintenance and operation. Skill in monitoring equipment and devices related to landfill gas systems. Skill in applying the tools used in creating and modifying spreadsheets and database applications. Ability to operate motor vehicle and traverse rough terrain. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Must possess First Aid and CPR certification. (Certification training provided by DSWA). Ability to work and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements: This position requires standing, walking, sitting, gripping or feeling with hands, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, talking or hearing, tasting or smelling and traversing on rough terrain.

This position may require lifting of up to 50 pounds.
